George Wyllie. Hurlford Hero.
George Wyllie was born in Hurlford and during the London Blitz 1940/41 served as a bomb disposal expert at that time.
A large 20 foot unexploded bomb fell in the Dean's Yard at St. Paul's Cathedral and George worked for three days to very successfully to defuse it.
He was awarded the George Cross by King George who had created this honour only a week before presenting it to George.
When he came home to Hurlford he never mentioned his heroic deed and it was not until 1984 when he tried to sell the medal did this story come to light.
The medal was bought by a London Bank and was presented to St.Paul's Cathedral where it will remain.
George died in 1987 aged 77 years of age.
